General Directions: The purpose of this exam is to demonstrate your skill at independent, critical reading, writing a timed essay on a prompt related to that reading, developing a claim that integrates information drawn from the reading, and documenting your sources using MLA style. You will use printouts of the assigned readings to integrate direct quotes, paraphrases, or summaries of the sources into your response. No other notes are allowed. Write your response on looseleaf. You have 2 hours to complete this exam. Make sure to write in present tense, and avoid using second person perspective “you.” This is a formal essay. You should have an intro, a thesis statement, support, and a conclusion. You may use pen or pencil. Skip lines, and only write on the front of each page. You do not need a heading, title, or works cited page, though you need to use in-text citations. You must use at least two of the assigned sources to support your argument. Assigned Readings Joy Press, “Hunks and Has-Beens” Kurt Vonnegut, “Harrison Bergeron” Harry Waters, “Life According to TV” Serena Elavia, “The Collective Conscience of Reality Television” Respond to ONE of the following two questions: Many social critics are saying that if “reality TV” is the entertainment that the American people desire, then America is in moral decline. They argue that the participants in these shows are a never-ending series of people whose behavior seems to say that they value prizes and notoriety more than their integrity. Based on your understanding of “reality TV” and of the assigned readings, what is the appeal of these programs? Do they mark a “new low” in what Americans will do and will watch for entertainment, or are the criticisms an over-reaction to a harmless fad? In a well-developed essay, argue whether these shows are creating a loss in cultural or moral values. Use at least two of the assigned readings (which you may quote, paraphrase, or summarize) to develop your claim. Take care to integrate your sources into your essay effectively and document your use of all sources (including images) in appropriate MLA format. You do not need to include a Works Cited list. One constant criticism of most television shows (including “reality TV” and news programs) is that they present a distorted picture of the world. For example, some groups are said to be underrepresented or incorrectly represented on television, maintaining stereotypes rather than true depictions. Moreover, programs claiming to be unbiased and objective appear to project partiality and slanted ideals to the viewing public. In a well-developed essay, argue whether this portrayal of “real” life on television has significant potential consequences for its viewing audience. Do the actions or opinions of people on screen have a negative or positive effect on people socially or emotionally? Use at least two of the assigned readings to develop claim. Take care to integrate your sources into your essay effectively, and to document your use of all sources in appropriate MLA format. You do not need to include a Works Cited list.

Siegfried, quite literally, wrote the book on dealing with academic stress/overload. In his work titled Burnout: A Quick Fire, he details many of his experiences both attending and tutoring at the University of Florida, utilizing anecdotes to make suggestions on how to survive as a scholar. Doing battle for many years against some of the most rigid and time-consuming curriculums the school has to offer, his work has become iconic on campus, often seen just about everywhere in its well-known blue pages. Having recently retired from tutoring to focus on his own career, Siegfried was able to make time to submit a copyright for his book which was approved. Being the sole owner and distributor of his work, Siegfried has not licensed with any vendors to sell his book. However, his former employer (arguing that Siegfried had written some of the book on company time even though he had been reprimanded for neglecting his normal duties to do so) has seen fit to sell copies of Siegfried’s book that they produced from a singular copy they had purchased (and proceeded to mass reproduce using their industrial copy machines). Under which of the following elements of copyright would Siegfried’s former employer be permitted to do this given the current circumstances?
