The objective exam is still significant for a 25% restriction of lumbar AROM in forward bending and right bending, both of which cause increased right low back and lower extremity pain. Passive SLR is 45° on the right, limited by right lower extremity pain, and 60° on the left, limited by hamstring tightness. Palpation reveals stiffness and tenderness to right unilateral posterior-anterior pressure at L5-S1 and no notable area of hypermobility. All other tests including lower extremity sensation, strength, and reflexes are within normal limit. Questions 2. What an applicable therapeutic intervention would be most appropriate to help decrease the stiffness prior to lumbar traction you and the athlete perceived? Provide justification for your selection.

Question 4. Following application of thermotherapy, you apply lumbar traction. Explain to the athlete why this intervention is indicated. Finally, demonstrate how to perform the intervention correctly. Provide justification for your modality selection. You answer question a to f. a. Provide contraindications and precautions. b. Describe appropriate parameters. c. Explain to the athlete how they plan to treat them. d. Before or during application, explain what you provide the athlete with expectations linked to the intervention. e. After application, what do you explain to the athlete that they should inform someone in the event they experience any discomfort or adverse reaction to the intervention? f. Following treatment, how do you clean or dispose of materials as appropriate.

Question 7. The athlete comes to a follow-up appointment the next day. He feels better than that of yesterday. The objective exam shows a 15% restriction of lumbar AROM in forward bending and right bending, both of which cause increased right low back and lower extremity pain. Passive SLR is 60° on the right, limited by right lower extremity pain, and 80° on the left, limited by hamstring tightness. Palpation reveals trigger point tenderness to the right lower paraspinal muscle. You decide to apply LASAER to the right lower paraspinal muscle.

Michael Menser is a 22-years old red-shirt junior male collegiate basketball player who transfers from UNC. He c/c constant mild to moderately severe right low back pain that radiates to his right buttock and lateral thigh after sitting for more than 20 minutes and that is relieved to some degree by walking or lying down. He reports no numbness, tingling or weakness of the lower extremity. The pain started about 4 weeks ago before he moved to State College, PA, the morning after SS spent lifting heavy weights in YMCA at which time he woke up with sever low back pain and right lower extremity pain down to his lateral calf. He had similar problems in the past, but they always resolved fully after a day or two with active rest. He saw his orthopedist 3 weeks ago, and an MRI scan showed a mild posterolateral disc bulge at L5-S1 on the right. He spent PT for 2 weeks (6 sessions) before he arrived on campus. The objective exam is still significant restriction of lumbar AROM in forward bending and right bending, both of which cause increased right low back and lower extremity pain. Passive SLR on the right is limited by right lower extremity pain, and the left lower extremity is limited by hamstring tightness. Question 1. Perform goniometric measurements of active lumbar flexion, bilateral lateral flexion, bilateral hip flexion. Please state the known normative values for each motion.
