Fill in the blank: In a large U.S. city, graffiti can be seen on several building walls, and the city police have dedicated few resources to addressing the problem. The prevalence of graffiti causes more serious crimes, like robbery and assault, to be committed at high rates in the city. This situation is best explained by Wilson and Kellings’ _____________ theory.

Introduction Part I, Case Analysis, is worth 46 points. While the case reading is 21 pages long, the first 10 pages are where you should focus! This case is a modern, real-world example of a global business strategy challenge in a hotly contested market. The Huawei case asks you to consider the costs and ramifications of building a new multi-sided platform strategy, which is at the heart of Huawei’s market entry choices, resulting from exogenous forces (governmental policies) putting a thumb on the scale of competition. This resulted from the US Government banning US firms from trading with Huawei, significantly impacting Huawei’s recently released mobile phone, the P40. You must read this case carefully to understand the strategic choices Huawei faced after being de-platformed from Google’s (Android) Application Management System (GMS)/Google Play. Strategy planners at Huawei understood that being de-platformed could cripple sales of the P40 outside of China unless Huawei provided a robust and attractive application gallery. While inside China, sales of the P40 thrived, due to Huawei having its proprietary application gallery (GMS/Google Play is not supported in China), outside of China is another story altogether. For Huawei to succeed in mobile phone sales outside of China, the adoption of the application gallery has two fundamental challenges: Developer support (one side of the multi-sided platform). Huawei needs to persuade developers to adapt their applications to be sold and supported through Huawei’s App Gallery platform. User adoption and acceptance of App Gallery (another side of the multi-sided platform). Huawei needs to entice users by having enough user applications (especially Key apps, the most popular applications users want) available to remove barriers towards purchasing the P40 for business and personal use. Instructions for your Case Analysis Response To address the challenges of this case successfully, you should address three key questions. What were the main issues Huawei was facing in early 2021? What options did Huawei have in response to the US ban? What would make Huawei’s mobile phone strategy successful in Europe, and can that success be translated beyond Europe? You will consider these questions and provide an essay response. Contained within your essay (2-3 pages), your response to the case must include your analysis, recommendations, and support for those recommendations. Essay Response Do’s and Don’ts DO write complete paragraphs and sentences. DO begin with an introduction that contains your main thesis and lists your main topics. DO end your essay response with a concluding paragraph, even if it’s just a sentence or two. DO respond to each question. I recommend using the questions as separate headings to help you focus quickly. DON’T do a bunch of bulleted lists in response to the questions. Lists as supporting evidence are fine, but this doesn’t replace actual essay writing. OKAY to use the questions as topic headings, but DON’T do a question/response format like the erudite example below: Question: What were the main issues Huawei was facing in early 2021? My Response: Haec est responsio mea ad quaestionem. Non est in forma commentationis. Solum responsio perlonga ad quaestionem respondebo. Additional Help In addition to providing a pre-paid link to the case from Harvard Business School Publishing, I’ve included a “cheat sheet” of key information to help you quickly work through the case. This comes from the case, but is intended to help you get to your critical thinking response as soon as possible. I also included a blank Excel Spreadsheet. You do NOT need to upload it in your response.
