Scenario: An observation conducted at Leo’s elementary school revealed that majority of his biting occurs when instructional demands are placed. Specifically, biting tends to occur most often when he is presented with reading materials. However, Leo also bites when presented with other work demands, such as math or writing. Leo also engages in other problem behaviors, such as elopement and pushing. For example, Leo will push his peers or teachers out of his way or toward an object to gain access to the desired object. Leo also elopes to his desk or restroom to escape work and other aversive activities. The following observation was conducted during English Language Arts at Leo’s school on 5/3/21 from 8:00-8:50am. Time Antecedent Behavior Consequence 8:04 AM Teacher says, “put backpack away and sit at your desk” (demand) Bites teacher’s arm Teacher yells, escorts Leo to the calm down corner (verbal and physical attention/escape) 8:20 AM Teacher removes iPad and places worksheet on Leo’s desk. Says, “write your name and draw what happened in the story” (tangible removed/demand) Leo swipes paper to the ground Teacher picks up paper and gives verbal and physical direction to write his name (verbal and physical attention) Teacher gives verbal and physical direction to write name (demand) Bites teacher’s arm Teacher yells, escorts Leo to the calm down corner (verbal and physical attention/escape) 8:42 AM Aide prompts Leo to back to carpet with peers (demand) Bites teacher’s arm Teacher yells, escorts Leo to the calm down corner (verbal and physical attention/escape) 8:44 AM Aide physically prompts Leo to remove his hands from his desk and gestures towards the carpet Leo attempts to bite the aid’s arm Aide removes arm before Leo bites down 8:45 AM   Teacher prompts Leo to apologize to aide (demand) Vocally approximates “sorry”; takes lunch and sits at desk Teacher tells Leo a snack is “okay” Using the information and table above, summarize the collected data. Your response must include: The type of direct assessment used. The target behavior that was assessed.  The location and time of day of the assessment.  The people present during the assessment. Common/relevant antecedents identified in the assessment. Common/relevant consequences identified in the assessment.  The hypothetical function of the target behavior.   Do not use bullet points in your response. You should format your summary as a narrative.
