The fоllоwing essаy questiоn focuses on аddressing а “scenario” about a particular population and health issue, including cultural information about the population. You are asked to: Identify, from the available information, what you can of the Ethnomedical system/systems for the target population; What cultural information, if any, is NOT there (information that you would have to find out to develop a health intervention); How you might obtain the missing information (research techniques); and Recommend a culturally tailored approach to address the health issue in that population. Organize your answer so that each of these four components is identified. MENTAL HEALTH INTERVENTION A large number of Pixtal people have immigrated to the U.S. and are living primarily near a number of small and mid-size towns/cities in the Midwest. There have been an unusually large number of cases where Pixtal adolescents have been pulled out of school by their parents after they exhibit a strange set of psychological and somatic symptoms. These children will often get up abruptly, in the middle of class, and start pacing either in the room or outside in the halls, with intense and concentrated facial expressions. In some cases, the children have been brought, with some physical force involved, to the school psychologists’ offices, and the psychologists have diagnosed them with post-traumatic stress or acculturation stress disorders, recommending that the parents obtain prescribed medications. The parents have typically refused, resulting in several standoffs between these families and the school, and the parents keeping their children away from the school. The Pixtal people have a number of rites of passage. One of the most important occurs during adolescence when young people are supposed to experience a vision that tells them what they are going to be (what social role they will occupy) in the next, young adult and adult stages of their life. The vision involves a spiritual communication from ancestors of the same clan, who form a kind of “governing council” that plays a role in the well-being of Pixtal people. If they don’t experience this vision, they may feel very frustrated and may try to bring on the vision by concentrating, pacing, and so on. At home in Pixtal country, it’s very easy to bring on this vision, because so many other adolescents are going through it and there is a kind of “peer effect.” But in the U.S., it is much more difficult. What can you do to help resolve this situation and address the dilemma faced by the Pixtal adolescents and families as well as the schools? Be sure to include the four required components (above) of the question.
