Artist Ansel Adаms (1902–1984) Instructiоns: Reаd the essаy abоut Ansel Adams, and then respоnd to the questions that follow. The American photographer Ansel Adams once said that in order to make a good photograph, “[Y]ou begin to see the picture—visualize it—and you make it.” In this portrait, taken by his friend and colleague Edward Weston, Adams takes us to the last step in this process. He has already seen and visualized the picture he wants to take. Now he looks through the viewfinder of his camera and captures what he sees with the click of a button. Ansel Adams was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area in California, where he developed a deep love for nature. Although he spent much of his life taking landscape photographs, he once explained that he took all kinds of jobs, “from morgue photography and surgical photography. . .to commercial advertisements and architecture.” He is best known, however, for his photographs of Yosemite and other sites in the western United States. His goal, as he described it, was helping others to see the beauty of nature through his photographs. He hoped that his pictures would move people to preserve nature for posterity. Adams’s photographs are different from Weston’s, even though they both pictured nature. He once said of Weston, “[H]is work never moved me, never stirred me to do anything different.…I was bothered by [Weston’s] emphasis on shape and form.” While Weston took close up photographs of shells, fruits, and vegetables, emphasizing their form, Adams’s pictures capture the grandeur and drama of the landscapes he photographed. Weston wanted us to see the form regardless of the subject, while Adams wanted us to see the subject in all its glory. Composition, shape, and rhythm are essential elements in Adams’s work. He looked for the right location from which to take his pictures and positioned himself to capture the site’s scale and richness. As he explained, “[T]he external world is nothing by a chaotic infinity of shapes, and the photographer’s problem is to isolate the shapes, both for meaning and for their inherent potential to produce forms within the format of the image.” He described how learning to see the shapes and rhythms in nature challenges all art students: “[S]eaweed has a shape, the faucet has a shape, the pipe has a shape—think of a square and how the rhythm is—oh boy, they really do begin to see that there are relationships of shapes.” The world continues to admire the way Adams captured the relationships of shapes, and he is widely recognized as one of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. His obituary in the New York Times in 1984 described it well: “In a career that spanned more than 50 years, Mr. Adams combined a passion for natural landscape, meticulous craftsmanship. . .and a missionary’s zeal for his medium to become the most widely exhibited and recognized photographer of his generation.” Instructions: Write a minimum of 100 words for your answer and be specific with your writing. Answer the following questions in YOUR OWN WORDS, using online resources are only permitted to help guide your answers, all content must be in your own words. Paraphrase and rewrite when needed. How would you describe Ansel Adams's approach to landscape photography? In what ways does nature have an impact on your experience? How did Ansel Adams describe the photographer’s role?
