Questiоn 1: In her bооk Adаm аnd Eve After the Pill: Revisited, Mаry Eberstadt argues that modern society is driven by a behind-the-scenes ideology called "secularism". a) Using Charles Taylor and Eberstadt, define secularism, explaining its effects on individuals and society as a whole. b) Relatedly, Eberstadt, Solzhenitsyn and Schumacher tell us stories about where the ideology comes from, offering trenchant critiques of the kinds of people and society it produces. Based on readings and class discussions (and using specific examples from the texts), explain their assessments of modern society. Do they agree or disagree? Further, do you agree or disagree with their assessments? why or why not? (note: the word "critique", while obviously negative in meaning in many contexts, also has a positive or neutral meaning.
