You think that the dog is worried or that the cat is indignant, and as soon as you do that, it’s natural to attribute distinctively human moral standing to the animal as well. If nonhuman animals don’t have souls then they don’t have intrinsic value, and if nonhuman animals don’t have intrinsic value then they don’t have rights.
