There are two major sources for our knowledge and understanding of Muhammad’s life and mission. To Muslims they are of different nature and value. The first is scripture, the Qur’an, the collection of revelations from Allah to Muhammad delivered to him through the agency of the angel Gabriel. The second is a vast body of material extant in the form of sayings and anecdotes which comprise the later community’s collective memory of the Prophet and his companions.
