To support the hospice, the monks breed and 5          sell their famous Saint Bernard pups. The dogs, which today are used primarily as companions, are expensive, but the price could be a bargain, since the pups’ ancestors have saved thousands of lives.                         A full-grown male Saint Bernard weighs almost 170 10        pounds; a female weighs almost 150. These dogs were bred to withstand bitter cold while patrolling the Alps. Their thick coats protect them from low temperatures, and even their huge paws, which pack down snow, suit them for mountain life. They have an uncanny ability to 15        predict avalanches and have been used to recue lost and snow-buried travelers. Although the popular image of this dog is a long-haired breed, the short-haired variety is more prized in the mountains because it does not collect as much icicle-forming snow on its coat. 20                     Saint Bernards are courageous and loyal.
