In а well-cоnsidered lоng essаy (4-5 full, rоbust pаragraphs with a paragraph defined as at least 5 sentences), respond to ONE of the following prompts.  Provide as much detail as you remember from lectures, readings, and online materials in support of your answer.  Be sure to respond to the entire question, as each have multiple parts.  Please note which question you are responding to in your answer (simply putting #1, #2, etc. is fine)   1. Explain the American victories in Europe and in the Pacific during World War II. What challenges did the U.S. face and what strategies did they use on both fronts? What were the deciding battles/events that turned the tide of the war toward an American victory? Be sure to discuss the debates on how to wage war (and end the war) and clearly identify where you situate your own thinking in these debates.   2. How did the U.S. government transition from World War II into the Cold War? This could be how soldiers are brought home as well as foundations for how the U.S. responded to the perceived threat of communism.   3. John F. Kennedy is a much-beloved president for many who helped advance Black civil rights and stood up to the communists. Discuss this legacy and whether he deserves that credit. Evaluate Kennedy’s perception of himself as a strong, masculine, “Cold warrior,” as well as devoted husband and father.   4. The Black freedom struggle is filled with stories of sorrow and injustice, as well as triumph and heroism. Using the four major themes we discussed (education, leadership, violence, and activism), give examples of each, explaining how the ebbs and flows of the movement kept it going. How is civil rights often oversimplified in American history and American memory to the point of getting the story wrong?   5. The 21st Century has brought with it a host of tensions over immigration, the economy, employment, trade policies, foreign policy (chiefly around the War on Terror), and issues related to social justice, among others. Going from the election of George W. Bush in 2000 through the 2020 election, analyze THREE of these major points of contention and explain the tensions between political parties (and their supporters) have come to a head.
