It was widely used as a pesticide until its production and use was significantly curtailed by the Montreal Protocol because of its role in ozone depletion. CH3I, Iodomethane, also known as methyliodide has been proposed as a substitute. Though it is volatile, it is a liquid at room temperature, and, therefore, is not similarly implicated in ozone depletion. The Lewis Structures for bromomethane and iodomethane are shown below.
