Demоcrаcy                                                                                                                                             Dr. Uptоn, Spring 2025 Finаl Exаm Answer any three оf the following four questions using course readings/podcasts/videos/issues of your choice in short but well-planned essay responses. You are not required to reference material from the first two units of the class but are welcome to do so where relevant. You may consult two pages (front and back) of typed or handwritten notes. Otherwise, the exam is closed book. This exam is worth 25% of your grade (same as the midterm). You have two hours but may finish early. Responses will be equally weighted, so I suggest spending at least 25 minutes on each: at least 5 minutes planning and outlining, at least 15 minutes writing, and at least 5 minutes editing/proofreading. Before you begin writing, form an argument in response to the prompt you choose and determine how you will support your argument (thesis) using specific quotations, paraphrases, and references to course texts. Each response should refer to at least two (and preferably more) different readings, podcasts, or videos assigned or shown in class in Units 3 and 4 of the course. Any single text, thinker, or video should be used no more than twice over all three responses. You can refer to and use your presentation research where relevant, but it does not count toward the minimum two assigned readings, podcasts, or videos. Is democracy compatible with concentrated private wealth? You may wish to consider some or all of these in your response: Friedman’s argument about economic and political freedom; the “wealth defense” thesis; campaign finance issues and Larry Lessig’s “Lesterland” argument; the political & psychological behavior of the wealthy. To what extent has the U.S. become an oligarchy? What factors, developments, or ideas have contributed to its oligarchic nature? You may wish to consider some or all of these in your response: the theoretical relationship between liberal democracy and oligarchy; the relationship over U.S. history between wealth and democracy, including wealth and early American culture, and what changed in the 1970s (the Powell Memo, neoliberal influence). What are populism and demagoguery, and how do they tend to threaten democratic institutions and democratic stability? In your response, discuss one or more of the historical examples considered in How Democracies Die, along with at least one other assigned text of your choice. Can/will the institutions of American democracy withstand the pressures of today’s political and cultural forces? What are the “guardrails” and are they strong enough? You may wish to consider some or all of these in your response: the challenges posed by global forces and other demands for freedom (such as by migrants); Sen. Chris Murphy’s concerns about democratic erosion; the Supreme Court’s potential role in shielding Pres. Trump; the role of Elon Musk. Tips and Reminders: Make sure your answer to each prompt is clearly formulated and stated. Your argument will be stronger if it’s more specific. Avoid sweeping generalizations. In addition to quotations, you can use logical reasoning and current or historical examples as evidence to support your claims. Don’t forget to raise and respond to potential counterarguments. Think about how someone might take the opposite view and try to respond to that claim. Writing quality matters. Proofread; check spelling, grammar and syntax carefully. The most important thing is to make your writing as clear as possible.
