Question 29 Solange arrives at JFK airport in New York from her native Democratic Republic of Congo, or DRC, where she had been a nurse. She wants to escape from her country because government soldiers raped her as punishment for medically treating fighters in the rebel forces. Solange is afraid to tell this to the CBP officer because she believes she will be sent back home. She presents a passport that was given to her by a friend who helped her to escape the country. However, the CBP officer is able to recognize that the passport is fraudulent. During a search of Solange’s luggage, officers discover her nursing diploma and letters of recommendation, which are to help her find work. A CBP supervisor determines that Solange tried to enter the United States illegally by using fraudulent documents and tells her that she is subject to expedited removal and will be put on the next plane back to the DRC. Solange is placed in a detention facility until there is a plane available to take her back home. While there, she learns about the asylum process. She apologized to an immigration officer in the detention center and notifies the officer that she is afraid to return. Will Solange still be put on the next plane back to the DRC?
