Put two spaces between paragraphs.     Assignment:  Choose one of the topics on this assignment sheet and write an essay in which you argue one of the two choices as the better option.  Note that you must choose something from this list; the topic must be approved by the instructor ahead of time or your essay will not be accepted and your grade will be recorded as a zero. Make sure to begin with two things that are alike; then, contrast them by establishing the superiority of one.  This paper is to be persuasive: you must convince the readers that your opinion is the reasonable or “right” way of viewing the situation.   Your paper will have the following elements:   Introduction (one paragraph, 100-200 words): A “hook” that captures the reader’s attention:  create a compelling scenario, and/or bring in personal experience to introduce the subject matter.  Transition to the two possible choices, A or B.     A clear thesis statement where you make an assertion as to which choice is the better one. A plan of development, where you give your two reasons why “A” is a superior choice to “B”, based on specific criteria.   Two Body Paragraphs (200-350 words each): Two body paragraphs in this paper, each offering a reason why A is a better choice than B. A point-by-point organizational plan. Both sides “A” and “B” will be discussed in each body paragraph with respect to the criterion established (half about side A, half about Side B).  Clear topic sentences that are assertions of what you are proving in the paragraph. Detailed explanation of your main point in the paragraph. Specific examples and illustrations to support the point you’re making.  Such examples can be: Hypothetical situations Personal Experience Factual evidence/numerical data (such as price) Relevant concrete detail and sensory imagery related to your topic Clear transitions from throughout the essay: from paragraph to paragraph, from point to example, from side to side. Use transitional phrases such as “by contrast” or “on the other hand” to turn from Side A to Side B. Use transitional phrases such as “for example” or “for instance” to signal a turn to an illustration. Credibility as a writer.  You want to come across as reasonable, intelligent, and trustworthy.  After reading your paper, one should feel like your perspective is the logical way to view the issue you’ve presented.   Required Outside Source (10 % of overall grade): This paper will also incorporate one direct quotation from an internet source (print, not video) on the subject matter. A maximum of two quotations from outside sources is allowed. (-5 for each quotation beyond the second). The source must either praise Side A or critique Side B. The sources must convey the ideas/opinions of the writer/speaker, not merely state facts.    The quotation cannot come in the introduction.   **Note**: A bonus point is awarded if the entire quotation is boldfaced for easy recognition.     The quotation must clearly identify the speaker of the quote or writer of the article and must be a minimum of one sentence, a maximum of three. The source for the quote must also be identified, either in the sentence or following the sentence in parentheses (name of article, name of website, or both). Quotation marks must be used around the direct quote, and the quotation must be smoothly and grammatically integrated into the structure of the writer’s own sentence. Once again, you are looking for an opinionated statement from the source, one that will support your argument about the merits Side A or the critique of Side B.   A Conclusion (One Paragraph, 100-200 words): Re-state the thesis (in other terminology). Bring the essay to a close: what is it that you want the reader to do or remember?
