Please answer ONE of the following questions with brief essay responses (six complete paragraphs minimum for each essay). 1. Many consider Eugene O’Neill and Arthur Miller as two of the greatest American playwrights of the 20th Century. Which playwright do you think should hold the title and why? Using the two plays we read for class, Beyond the Horizon and Death of a Salesman, discuss their use/experimentation of theatrical “-isms,” and decide whom you believe did more to advance the level/quality of American Theatre and dramatic literature. Finally, compare and contrast the prevailing themes for each playwright and give supporting reasons and examples to strengthen your argument for which playwright should hold the title of “Greatest American Playwright.” Be sure to cite specific examples from the texts to support your essay. -or- 2.
