Zambia is a country whose residents comprise more than 70 ethnic groups and who speak more than 20 languages. During the 1980s and 1990s, radio was the most popular medium in the country. Despite the country’s ethnolinguistic diversity, however, official radio stations, could only broadcast in 8 languages, including English, Zambia’s official language, and 7 other native languages like Bemba, which 56% of all Zambians spoke at the time, and Nyanja, which 42% of all Zambians spoke. English radio content during this era focused on international news, politics, and formal educational programming. In contrast, content broadcast in the other 7 approved languages was generally limited to storytelling, traditional music, and other relatively narrow understandings of culture. In addition, when current events were broadcast in ethnic languages, news editors often removed content about politics and other complex topics that they believed would not make sense to the ostensibly “illiterate” and “rural” speakers of ethnic Zambian languages even though more than 75% of all Zambian radio listeners lived in urban areas at the time.
