Habituation is the term for a common behavior pattern: the more we are exposed to something, the less aware we become of it and, therefore, the less we respond to it. During the Vietnam War, reports from the combat zone appeared every night on television. Viewers soon became so used to the news stories that scenes of violence and body counts no longer horrified them. The war became just another television program.
