Because we weren’t there when it was built 300 years ago, we have to make some assumptions—geologists often do this to make estimates. A local restaurant owner is considering the purchase of a pier, whose walkway is 50 cm above the high-water mark, for use in outdoor events. The owner has been advised that piers with walkways less than 30 cm above the high-water mark should be avoided because they can be flooded by storms and very high tides. If submergence continues at the rate you calculated, how many years will pass before the high-water mark is less than 30 cm from the base of the walkway?
