Lаbоrаtоry Expectаtiоns & Safety Information regarding chemical use, personal protective equipment, and appropriate disposal procedures will be provided by the laboratory instructor. Eating, drinking, and the use of cosmetic or tobacco products are always prohibited in the laboratory. Any accident resulting in personal injury must be reported immediately to the laboratory instructor, as should any equipment that is damaged or malfunctioning. Before leaving the laboratory, waste generated during laboratory activities should be separated into the appropriate waste containers, and all glassware and equipment used should be cleaned and returned to its proper storage location. A Laboratory Safety Agreement must be completed and submitted before beginning work in the laboratory. • Store backpacks, coats, phones, food, and drinks in the designated lab area. • Due dates for lab assignments are announced in class. • Read through lab materials carefully before attending lab. Pre-lab quizzes or activities may be used to check preparation. • Have access to your textbook, lab handouts, and notes during lab. • Dissection specimens and lab equipment are available only during your scheduled lab period. • Make the most of your time in lab. Lab activities reinforce lecture concepts and prepare you for exams. Classroom Expectations • If you miss class, check with a classmate for notes and announcements. You are always welcome to ask me follow-up questions, but please avoid asking, “Did we do anything in class?” • Wait until I dismiss class before packing up. • To be successful in this course, expect to spend about 8 to 12 hours per week studying outside of class. • Use your Belmont email, include your course and section number, and sign your name. • For technical issues with Canvas or Mastering A&P, contact Pearson support or campus IT as early as possible. For Honorlock problems, use the live chat link inside the Honorlock window; their support runs 24/7 and can help you mid-exam. Please do not wait until the night before an exam or deadline. Electronics Laptops, tablets, and similar devices may be used for taking notes and completing course-related activities. Cell phones may be used when an in-class activity requires them, including QR-code quizzes, surveys, or other instructor-directed exercises. All devices used during class and laboratory must be limited to course-related work. Activities such as social media, messaging, shopping, gaming, or work for another course are not appropriate during class. Cell phones should be silenced before class begins. If you need to take an important call or respond to an urgent message, please step out of the classroom. Students who repeatedly use a device for unrelated activities may be asked to put the device away. Headphones, AirPods, and other listening or communication devices must be removed before class begins unless their use is authorized for a course activity or an approved accommodation. Cell phones, headphones, smartwatches, and other unauthorized devices must be stored during examinations. Artificial Intelligence Use The use of artificial intelligence tools is permitted for ungraded study and preparation activities and when specifically authorized in the instructions for a graded assignment. AI should support your learning rather than replace your own thinking, writing, or understanding. Acceptable uses include: • Exploring biological concepts in addition to assigned readings and lectures. • Creating study guides or practice questions from your own notes. • Brainstorming or outlining ideas when the instructions for an assignment permit AI assistance. • Reviewing the grammar and clarity of writing you created yourself, when permitted by the assignment instructions. Unacceptable uses include: • Using AI during an examination, quiz, or other assessment unless I explicitly authorize it. • Submitting AI-generated writing, answers, explanations, or analyses as your own work. • Using AI to complete a graded assignment when its instructions do not permit AI assistance. • Copying or paraphrasing AI-generated content without appropriate attribution. • Uploading names, grades, student records, private communications, or other sensitive information to an AI tool. • Uploading instructor-created slides, examinations, assignment materials, or other protected course content to a commercial AI tool without permission. Belmont provides Microsoft Copilot as its approved generative AI platform. Other tools, including ChatGPT and Gemini, may be used for the permitted activities described above, but users must follow the tools’ terms of service and the restrictions in this policy. When AI use is authorized for submitted academic work, you must identify the tool and explain how it was used. Follow the AI citation guidance provided in Canvas. Undisclosed or unauthorized AI use may be treated as academic misconduct under Belmont’s Honor Code. Additional University guidance is available through Belmont’s AI Commons. If you are uncertain whether a particular use is acceptable, ask before submitting the work.
