A 45 year old male, who suffered a traumatic, left-sided, below the knee amputation during a motor vehicle accident eight months ago, presents to his primary doctor with a complaint of excruciating pain in the amputated limb. Due to depression secondary to the accident, he has not had medical care in several months. Exam reveals the amputated limb has healed appropriately, and it appears that his prosthesis fits well.
