Acаdemic Integrity Pоlicy Acаdemic Integrity is fundаmental tо the educatiоnal mission of Weatherford College, and the College expects its students to maintain high standards of personal and scholarly conduct. Academic dishonesty of any kind will not be tolerated. Academic dishonesty includes but is not limited to, cheating on an examination or other academic work, plagiarism, collusion, and the abuse of resource materials, including unauthorized use of Generative AI. Departments may adopt discipline-specific guidelines on Generative AI usage that have been approved by the instructional dean. Any student who is demonstrated to have engaged in any of these activities will be subject to immediate disciplinary action in accordance with institutional procedures. English Department Academic Integrity Policy Academic Integrity and AI Use PolicyMaintaining academic integrity is essential to uphold the reputation of excellence for students, instructors, and Weatherford College. The English department uses Turnitin.com to verify the originality of submitted work, including detecting AI-generated content. All assignments must be submitted through CANVAS; submissions outside of CANVAS will not be accepted. While Turnitin provides automated checks, it is not a substitute for instructor evaluation. Assignments may be reviewed for alignment with course objectives, writing style (MLA, APA, CBE, etc.), and appropriate skill level. If an assignment raises concerns, students may be asked to participate in a conference and provide evidence of their writing process (e.g., notes, drafts). Students may request the department chair’s presence during this review. AI tools may be used in limited, approved ways during the writing process. Students must confirm with their instructor whether AI use is permitted for specific assignments and are responsible for proper citation and attribution when applicable. As part of our college’s commitment to digital literacy, all students have access to Microsoft 365 and Copilot, which are the preferred tools for AI-assisted writing and productivity in this course. Permitted Use of AI Tools Microsoft Copilot may be used to: Brainstorm ideas and organize thoughts Generate outlines or writing prompts Assist with grammar, style, and formatting Summarize readings or research (with proper citation) Support revision and editing processes Guidelines for Responsible Use Transparency: Students must clearly indicate when and how AI tools were used in their writing. This includes a brief note at the end of assignments (e.g., “Copilot was used to generate an outline and suggest transitions between paragraphs.”). Academic Integrity: AI-generated content must not replace original student work. Submitting AI-written essays or responses without meaningful student input is considered plagiarism. Tool Preference: Because Microsoft Copilot is provided through the college, it is the recommended AI tool for all coursework. Use of third-party AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Grammarly, etc.) is permitted but must be disclosed and used in accordance with the same ethical standards. Prohibited Use Using AI to complete entire assignments without substantial revision or personal contribution Misrepresenting AI-generated work as entirely original Using AI to bypass reading or critical thinking tasks Instructor Support Students unsure about how to use AI tools appropriately are encouraged to ask for guidance. We will explore ethical AI use together throughout the semester, including how to integrate these tools into your writing process without compromising academic integrity. Instructor Use of AI for Feedback To support timely and consistent feedback, the instructor may use Microsoft Copilot or other college-approved AI tools to assist in reviewing and commenting on student work. These tools may help summarize student submissions, align feedback with rubric criteria, and identify areas for improvement. All AI-assisted feedback is reviewed and finalized by the instructor. The use of AI does not replace human judgment, and students are encouraged to seek clarification on any comments or suggestions provided.
