A substantial fraction of oceanic crust has undergone hydrothermal metamorphism. Given this, should we assume that the process of hydrothermal metamorphism occurs more or less uniformly throughout the oceans? Note the distinction here between rocks that have have undergone metamorphism and the process of metamorphism itself. Is the latter as widely distributed as the metamorphic oceanic rocks that are its product?
