Ligаments аre cоnnective tissue thаt cоnnect bоne to bone. Tendons are connective tissue that connect muscle to bone. Elastic deformations (i.e., lengthening and shortening) of ligaments and tendons are normal in our daily activities, and occur many times a day without tissue injury. With high stress, however, ligaments and tendons can be sprained or ruptured. A few years ago, NBA star Kevin Durant unfortunately suffered an Achilles tendon rupture. (A picture of the Achilles tendon's location is shown below). The tendon was pulled from his ankle bone and recoiled up into his calf muscle. Now thinking about Young's modulus, at what region/point of the stress-strain curve does a partial rupture happen? At what region/point does a complete rupture happen? Based on your answers, within what range do musculoskeletal tissue (e.g., bone, ligament, tendon, muscle etc) need to function in order to avoid injury?
