After getting up one morning, a 64-year-old male had difficulty walking because he tended to fall to the left. When he lay down, he felt as if the left side of his face was burning. When he called for help, his voice has hoarse, and had difficulty swallowing a sip of water. In the ER an examination revealed that his left eyelid drooped, and his left pupil was smaller on the left that the right. He had a right beating horizontal nystagmus, and reduced hearing on the left. He did not respond to pin pricks on the left side of his face, or the right side of the body.
