Again, you as a hypothetical lobbyist are trying to protect a species and its habitat under the Endangered Species act. You are trying to protect, lets say, the Spotted Owl and its Old Growth Forest habitat from logging and destruction but someone says that because it can interbreed with the Brown Owl in New Mexico, it is not a true species. You counter with the idea that it is a species are defined as the smallest possible group which descends from a common ancestor and carries recognizable derived traits.
