8) Please place the following repertoire into the appropriate era (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Modern)     Haydn Concerto  Bohme Trumpet Concerto  Tomasi Concerto  Telemann Concerti  Albrechsberger Sonata 

(hour 2) Discuss chamber music involving the piano and wind instruments.  Please include combinations of wind instruments and string instruments with piano, and music written just for piano and winds.  This can include significant sonatas, as well as trios, quartets, quintets, and sextets.  Try to include composers from at least three stylistic periods.  You may even include pieces for piano and large wind ensemble but focus principally on chamber music.  Or  Discuss the two piano concerti of Johannes Brahms making specific references to individual movements in each work as well as details of the piano writing, orchestration, and other features you have discovered.   

(allow 20 minutes for this section) Make the case for the need, or lack thereof, for vowel modification.  Include differing voice types in the discussion.

(third hour) Identify at least three major compositional trends in the twentieth century and describe specific piano pieces in the repertoire that reflect those trends.  You need not limit yourself to composers or trends of one continent and may draw from the entire century provided you can describe specific works that reflect the trends.    Or     2. Describe the influence(s) of jazz on piano music in the twentieth century.  Refer to elements of harmony, rhythm and orchestration and any other elements you can describe and feel free to direct the reader to examples of solo, chamber music and concerti as you see fit.   If you have knowledge of examples of jazz musicians drawing inspiration from classical composers and compositions, feel free to share, but focus principally on the influence of jazz on “classical composers and pieces.” You may also identify composers who seem to inhabit both the jazz and classical orbits simultaneously.   

(allow 20 minutes for this section) Discuss Registration and address the following:  What is a register?  What are the common names for the registers of people who sing tenor/bass-baritone/baritone/bass? For the registers of people who sing soprano/mezzo?*  How do we best blend registers?  What role, if any, does resonance play in the blending of registers?   * In some books, these are referred to as “male registers” and “female registers.” We are using inclusive speech, but we do not wish to confuse you. If you prefer to provide a gendered discussion, you may.

(allow 20 minutes for this section) Choosing from the following list, select one composer, and write an essay describing their development as a composer as seen in their Lieder output. Please give specific Lied titles and identify by period (that is, early middle, late). Also indicate the appropriate voice types for specific Lieder, poets set, and the type of poetry set:   Franz Schubert Hugo Wolf Richard Strauss Clara Schumann Gustav Mahler Johannes Brahms
