Short(er) question #2 The first vascular plants to evolve had sporophyte and gametophyte generations that resembled one another. This meant that both the sporophyte and the gametophyte had vascular tissue (xylem tracheids, phloem). Seedless vascular plants now (mostly) have much simpler gametophyte generations which lack vascular tissue. Why is a lineage with a simpler gametophyte generation more evolutionarily successful?
