Those who refused to purchase liberty bonds or T-Stamps, who did not volunteer for military service, or who failed to serve in auxiliary positions or work for the American Red Cross were accused of “slackerism.” Immigrants and recent nationals (who faced intense concerns about their patriotism and commitment to the country) were particularly interested in demonstrating their patriotic zeal. Many immigrants worked to assimilate into American culture, tried to learn American history, and publicly displayed their patriotism as a way of demonstrating their loyalty to their adopted country.
