Cherilyn (Cher) Sarkisian has been a passionate and flamboyant force in the entertainment industry for over 40 years, as a singer, songwriter, and actress, and as a political activist and humanitarian. Cher and her first husband, Sonny Bono, created a popular variety show in the 1970s. After their divorce, she went on to release solo platinum albums and star in several movies, receiving Academy Awards for her roles in Silkwood and Moonstruck. But, in the early 1990s, Cher was diagnosed with a condition in which she “wasn’t able to work for almost three years.” She recalls that she was constantly sick and that the condition was “devastating.” One of the predominant symptoms of this disease is extremely low energy, despite a lack of activity. When asked whether she thought it was a psychosomatic illness, Cher replied, “My experience was that it was really a physical illness, but it does make you depressed as well.”
