Cаtherine Erdmаn аpplied tо wоrk as a firefighter fоr the city of Madison, Wisconsin. One element of the selection process was a physical abilities test, a test that included such activities as running and jumping while wearing heavy equipment; picking up charged fire hoses; and descending a ladder while carrying a person. Of the applicants who took the physical abilities test, 395 out of 471 males passed with a 83.7% pass rate, while 4 out of 28 females passed, with a 14.2% pass rate. Erdman was not hired after she failed to achieve a minimum qualifying score on the physical abilities test. Erdman filed a discrimination suit against the city claiming that the physical abilities test has a disparate impact on women. Describe the steps that Erdman would need to follow in order to prove a case of adverse impact. Include in your answer a description of the specific types of reliability and validity evidence that Madison would need to provide to defend its use of the physical abilities test to make employment decisions.
