Pаtient 1: Interestingly, yоu nоte thаt this secоndаry infection is caused by an obligate intracellular pathogen. Describe how your innate immune system can defend against this pathogen when the bacteria is INSIDE of the host cell by filling in the blanks below. For full credit write out all terms in full, do not use abbreviations. An infected cell typically communicates that it is infected by presenting an antigen from the pathogen on its cell surface using [13a]. Through our adaptive immune system, this signal can be recognized by [13b] resulting in the death of the infected cells. But some pathogens can remove this complex from the infected cells membrane. The absence of this complex is recognized by [13c], which are associated with the host’s [13d] immune response. These immune cells also recognize [13e] on the infected cell’s surface. Once these immune cells bind to an infected cell they release two types of [13f], small proteins that cells use to communicate. The first is [13g], it functions by [13h]. The second is [13i], it functions by [13j]. Together these result in the programmed cell death of the infected cell.
