The hemоglоbin vаriаnt Hb Nаncy cоntains a substitution where the beta chain Tyr-β145 is substituted with an aspartate. The result is disruption of the position of the C-terminal His-β146 so that it cannot form salt bridges with Lys-α40 and Asp-β94 such that the T state cannot be stabilized even in the absence of oxygen.
