Dr. Van Ryan is a social psychologist who is curious about how women’s clothing choices affects people’s perceptions of their intelligence. Specifically, she is curious how women who wear high heels are perceived in the workplace. She hypothesizes that there will be differences in perceptions of intelligence depending on whether they wear high heels or flat heels. She recruits 100 participants to view short silent film clips of a woman sitting at her desk, getting up from her desk with several papers, and walking over to talk to another female colleague in the next office. Half of the participants are randomly assigned to see her walking in high heels and the other half observe her walking in flat shoes. Dr. Van Ryan asks participants to rate the women’s intelligence in each condition. What is the measured variable in Dr. Van Ryan’s study?
