Drosophila have large chromosomes in their salivary glands called polytene chromosomes. When these chromosomes are exposed to the hormone, ecdysone (the molting hormone), regions of the chromosome form chromosomal puffs. What affect does chromosomal puffing have on transcriptional activity of genes in this region (i.e. is there more or less transcription in these regions)? In class we talked about a few experiments testing hypotheses regarding the relationship between the state of chromosome and the amount of transcription taking place. What conclusions were drawn from these experiments?
