He stated that his family has pretty much always kept to themselves and that they prided themselves in living quiet lives. He also described his family as being very particular and often very critical. He stated that he often felt like he couldn’t do anything right, no matter how hard he tried. As he grew up, he found that this shyness eventually turned into fear of being around others. He found this especially true in situations in which he was meeting new people. When asked what makes him particularly fearful when meeting new people he stated: “I just know that they will judge me. Like they will see right through me and see how awkward I am. I so desperately want to make friends and get married someday, but I am afraid that everyone will see just how incompetent I am and reject me. Because of this, I typically stay away from parties and other gatherings. I’m so tired of this, it’s keeping me from dating and from progressing in my job. Can you please help me!!???”

Over the last 6 months, Allie’s parents reported that she has become increasingly disrespectful toward them. They stated that they cannot pinpoint a particular event that might have caused her behavior (after checking with her as well, there does not seem to be any significant stressor). They stated that when they request that she complete her chores or do her homework, that she “flies off the handle,” often yelling and screaming. She becomes combative at times and has been known to “get back at them” when they punish her for her behavior. More recently, Allie was suspended from school for being disrespectful to her teachers and the principal. Her mother added that Allie has been having more arguments with her friends lately and seems to spend more time alone. Her parents ended the session saying “It’s like a flip is switched and Allie becomes an angry, uncontrollable tyrant. We love her, but we don’t know what to do.”
