Why dо I engаge specificаlly with the Bаrtleby-as-Thоreau strain оf criticism? At this point, some critics might begin to object that Bartleby’s efforts are not corrosive to society but express a commitment to what Henry David Thoreau described as “civil disobedience.” As McCall writes, “an entire subsection of the Bartleby Industry, impressive in its size and ingenuity… ‘proves’ that Bartleby is Henry David Thoreau” (14). Such readings are no doubt encouraged by the narrator’s confessing, “Nothing so aggravates an earnest person as a passive resistance” (13). The phrase “passive resistance” appears nowhere in Thoreau’s writing on the topic, but we associate it with civil disobedience in general because passive resistance was a key component of civil disobedience for such luminaries as Mohandas K. Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr. Michael Rogin, probably the most well-regarded critic to argue that Bartleby is part of this tradition, writes, “Bartleby exposed the passive aggression which lies behind nonviolent resistance. Bartleby punishes the lawyer by punishing himself. He avoids a straightforward triumph, as Thoreau does, but in a way that inverts Thoreau’s project. Bartleby undermines his adversary and destroys himself” (195). Rogin’s reading is mistaken because he assumes that the narrator is adversarial to his employee. How many times does he try to save him from self-destruction? While Bartleby is not paid well by the narrator, there is nothing in the story to suggest that Bartleby’s protest is responding to his working condition. What is he protesting? Thoreau had the Mexican-American War and the extension of slavery. Meanwhile, Bartleby merely has his preferences.
