In a research study, representatives from Coca-Cola approached 200 college students and invited them to participate in a survey regarding a forthcoming soft drink product. Participants were informed that the survey would take approximately 60 minutes to complete. The students were divided into three groups: One-third of the students were told that “no student had participated in the survey yet.” Another one-third of the students were informed that “about 40% of the students had already taken the survey.” The remaining one-third of the students were told that “80% of the students had already completed the survey.” The ensuing graph depicts the number of students who opted to take part in the survey:
