In the Minnesota hunger experiment (1944), physiologist Ancel Keys conducted a study in which 36 conscientious objectors (to serving in the military during WWII) underwent a period of calorie restriction designed to produce a 25% reduction in the participants’ body weight. The study was primarily focused on refeeding strategies after the calorie reduction period, because hunger and starvation were prevalent in many parts of Europe during WWII.
