Essаy Instructiоns Where/Hоw yоu will write:This diаgnostic will be completed online in our LMS under Honorlock proctoring. You will type your response directly into the exаm text box (or upload a single file, if your course setup uses uploads). 1) Prompt What does identity mean to you? Use one personal story or memory to explain. 2) Structure Write 2 paragraphs (or 3 paragraphs for Honors/Expanded). Paragraph 1 – Story (Concrete Details)Tell a short story that shows an aspect of your identity. This could be a family memory, a school experience, a cultural tradition, a language moment, or any situation that shaped how you see yourself. Include enough details (who, where, what happened) so your reader can clearly picture the moment. Paragraph 2 – Reflection (Meaning + Insight)Reflect on what this story reveals about identity. How does it show what identity means to you? Explain why this memory matters and connect it to your ideas about how identity is formed, chosen, or imposed. Use details from Paragraph 1 to support your explanation. Paragraph 3 – Honors/Expanded Version (Broader Connection)Extend your reflection by connecting your story to broader cultural or societal themes. For example: How do family expectations, cultural norms, language, or social roles influence not only your identity, but the identities of others? How does your story fit into a larger pattern? 3) Unassisted Work Requirement (Honorlock Rules) This diagnostic must be completed independently during the proctored session. You may NOT use: AI tools (ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, etc.) Grammar/paraphrasing tools (Grammarly, Quillbot, etc.) Notes, drafts, templates, or prewritten text Websites, dictionaries, translators, or outside resources Help from peers, tutors, or anyone else (in person, chat, text, etc.) You MUST: Keep only the exam page open during the attempt Write in your own natural voice without outside assistance This exercise helps me understand your natural writing voice at the start of the semester. 4) Tech + Setup Requirements (Before You Start) Use a laptop or desktop (not a phone/tablet). Have a working webcam and microphone enabled. Choose a quiet space and be prepared to show your workspace if prompted. Make sure your internet connection is stable and your device is charged. If you have technical issues with Honorlock, document the issue (screenshot if possible) and contact support immediately, then message me as soon as you can. 5) Formatting + Submission Type your full name at the top of your response. Use clear paragraph breaks (press Enter between paragraphs). Submit your work before the timer ends. Late submissions may not save. 6) Purpose This is not graded for quality. You will receive full participation credit for completing it. The goal is to help me understand your current writing style, strengths, and areas where you may want support. Writing Tip Aim for 5–8 sentences per paragraph, with sentences averaging 6–12 words. These are guidelines, not strict rules. Focus on telling your story clearly and connecting it to your reflection.
