Phillipe has lived on the Westside of Kansas City since he and his family couldn’t find anywhere else affordable or open to him as a Latino. Recently, developers have been purchasing up plots, tearing down old houses, and building luxury apartments. As a result, Phillipe’s own home value has increased by 400% in the last two years, driving his property taxes up to nearly unaffordable annual costs. His old grocery store was bought out by an organic grocer owned by Whole Foods and he has to travel further to obtain more affordable food.
