Potassium (K) is a metal in the first column of the periodic table, directly underneath sodium. Its behavior is similar to sodium. Potassium metal is poisonous. However, the compound potassium chloride (KCl) is edible and tastes salty. What best explains this? HINT: Same logic as sodium example in lecture.
