The central conflict in this play is that the men (Mr. Hale, Mr. Peters, and the County Attorney) dismiss and devalue women’s perspectives. The women, Mrs. Peters and Mrs. Hale, suffer ridicule from the men as they analyze the details of the scene in the kitchen. They can see the hardship (and possibly abuse) that Minnie Wright has suffered with John Wright, and they feel great sympathy for her.
