In many ways, this sets up the press and journalism as holders of exceptional status, even among other powerful institutions. Using both legal precedent and philosophical arguments discussed in class and readings, chart the history of the press’ influence in the United States. Why did the founders give special respect toward the press? How has the Supreme Court, over time, shown an appreciation for that respect? What cases stand out the most in your opinion?
