Describe оne mоdificаtiоn you cаn mаke to the following activity to make it more accessible for Level 1 and 2 English learners. Prefix Pockets (Morphology) Specific Skill: Prefixes Materials Needed: Construction paper, printer paper, markers, pencil, notebook paper Description of idea/activity: Create three or more pockets with prefixes on the front as well as their definitions Cut out strips of paper for students to write out words that contain the appropriate prefixes. Students can work in jigsaw groups where they each focus on one specific prefix and coming up with words to fill each pocket. Students will then share aloud with the rest of the class as they place their words in the corresponding prefix pocket on the bulletin board Students will have their own copy in their writers notebooks where they can record all of the words for each prefix. How it will help an EL: This will help ELs because it is a hands on activity where they can collaborate with classmates, expand their vocabulary and familiarity with prefixes, determine the meaning of new words, and they can practice their oral language skills as well. A pаlindrоme is а wоrd thаt reads the same frоm right to left or left to right; e.g., radar. We want to use egrep on one of the Linux dictionaries files, located at /usr/share/dict/american-english, in order to identify palindromes that are EXACTLY 5 letter-long. Please note: The file /usr/share/dict/american-english is available on the vmportal.cse.usf.edu Linux virtual machines. If it is not available on your system, like for instance on the USF student cluster, then use a small file that you make yourself with one word per line. Chose the words that you use so that that file is relevant to testing in the context of this question.
