The Sumerians were trailblazers in many ways in the ancient world, it is obvious from looking at their society they were quite advanced in writing, image depiction, and religious beliefs. In their works of art there are visual queues to help the observer understand what we are looking at. In particular there were small statues found in the ruins of a temple that depict the figures with overly sized eyes that are open and look slightly upward. What do these votives represent?
