FDTC Hоnоrlоck Policy & Procedures                     Fаculty mаy utilize Honorlock to proctor online exаms and quizzes. As such, students will need reliable access to a PC, PC/Mac laptops, and Chromebooks to ensure all exams are completed on time. Cell phones and tablets (iPad, Kindle, etc.) will not work with Honorlock since they don't run a full version of the OS.   FDTC strives to provide a quality education for classes that are taught either face-to-face or online. As an extension of that philosophy, tests and quizzes are administered in a manner that will maintain academic integrity on the student's part. The following set of rules should be followed when using Honorlock. Instructors will publish and review their requirements before the examination, giving students ample time to understand and clarify any protocols. Some departments may require stricter adherence to the following rules. Any specific requirements that departments and instructors require for their examinations should fall within the purview of these general guidelines:   Testing Guidelines:   During closed-note exams, e-books, textbooks, or course-packs are not allowed.  Students should remain in front of the computer for the duration of the exam. Bathroom breaks may not be permitted unless there is an emergency. Cell phones, tablets, laptops, smart watches, earbuds, headphones, and other electronic devices are prohibited. Failure to follow these instructions could result in a violation of the FDTC Student Code of Conduct. The entire desk area during the room scan should be visible.                                                                                                                             Testing Area: Lighting in the room should be bright enough to show the student's face and surrounding area in a clear and detailed manner. Students should avoid sitting with windows in the background, which can create shadows in the testing area. If lamps do not provide adequate lighting for a testing environment, overhead lighting may be needed. One must be in a well-lit area so the individual is clearly visible during testing.  All obstructions to monitoring and proctoring should be avoided. Students should clear the testing environment (desk, table, and walls) of all course material. No other materials are allowed out or to be visible during the exam. You are to remove all books, papers, notebooks, calculators, etc., unless expressly permitted in the posted guidelines for that particular examination. Students should show the work area during the room scan without obstructing the webcam with one's body or other items during the scan.  The scan must also show that the testing environment is free of ALL coverings, including blankets, that could be used to hide papers, electronics, etc. during the quiz/exam.  Failure to produce a complete scan of the entire desk area could result in a zero on the test.  One might naturally look to the left, right, or down when pondering during an exam. However, doing so unnaturally could be viewed as looking at written or electronic notes and could result in an inference of academic misconduct taking place during testing. Thus, examinees should avoid playing with animals, taking care of children, or doing other activities that could cause attention to be diverted from the testing screen. All other computer programs and/or windows on the testing computer must be closed prior to logging into the proctored test environment. There should be no loud music, television, radio, or other disturbances playing in the background that distract from the monitoring and proctoring of the exam. The test taker may not wear hats and/or sunglasses during the exam. No other persons or parties aside from the exam taker should be permitted near the testing environment, and all communication between the exam taker and third parties is prohibited. In addition, students should ensure that the testing environment mimics the classroom setting. No third parties, i.e., children, spouses, etc., should be in the testing area. Having a proper time to test when these distractions do not become an issue is essential.   Disabling the microphone or webcam at any time during the exam is prohibited. If caused accidentally, rectify the matter immediately, and after the test, notify the instructor. Students should keep their faces centered on the webcam. Students should not talk out loud while taking the test and should act as if taking the test in a classroom setting. Talking out loud could be interpreted as attempting to communicate to someone off-camera.  Students failing to adhere to the above-listed Honorlock protocols and procedures and/or engaging in any misconduct on any will be notified of potential disciplinary actions by their instructor.  All students have the right to appeal the disciplinary action. Finally, most exams have some defined time period for completion. Instructors should clearly publish start and finish times and the length of the testing period, and students should be cognizant of those defined time periods. Once the time is expired, exams must be submitted and graded based on the given submission. In total, the test taker should not engage in any actions during the exam that may call into question one's academic integrity of the examination. Before the examination, the student should contact the instructor to ask about exceptions to any of the above protocols. The student should also contact the instructor immediately after the exam to provide context if there is an inadvertent failure to follow the rules. Clarifying Language   Academic Misconduct Vs. Suspicious Activity: Students are concerned when they are accused of suspicious activity during their testing, in the sense that they are being accused of cheating.  That is not the case.   Academic Misconduct occurs when there is no doubt that testing activities have been violated and cheating has occurred as a result of those violations. A minimum of 2 faculty will have looked at the Honorlock video to verify cheating has occurred. A definite example of cheating would be: talking on a cell phone with someone and discussing the exam as you take the test.   Suspicious Activity is when Honorlock protocols have been broken. A minimum of 2 faculty members will have looked at the Honorlock video to verify that suspicious activity has occurred due to broken Honorlock protocols. An example of suspicious activity is when eyes are seen looking off-screen or diverted to areas that do not include the testing information on the screen. Therefore, it is CRITICAL to keep your eyes on the screen (as well as follow the other Honorlock protocols). Do not have any pets or other distractions in your room while taking the test that can cause you to look off-screen. Suspicious activity can result in a warning.   Students will quite often try to explain what was occurring, but please realize the issue of suspicious behavior involved breaking the honor lock guidelines. The key is to follow the guidelines, thereby reducing warnings and potential disciplinary actions, if those suspicious activities continue from assessment to assessment.
