Fоr mаny yeаrs, it wаs thоught that Plutо was the ninth planet in our solar system. However, in 2006 Pluto was reclassified as a dwarf planet by the International Astronomical Union (IAU), which is an organization of astronomers from around the world. According to the IAU, a planet in our solar system must do three things. Planets must orbit the Sun. Planets must be mostly round. Planets must have enough gravity to clear away other objects from their orbital path. Pluto orbits the sun, is mostly round, and does have sufficient mass to be a planet, but it is not able to dominate its gravitational orbit. Instead, it shares its orbital neighborhood with other objects. Pluto is an average 39.5 AU from the Sun. To find this distance in miles, we multiply by the ratio of miles to AU. It is useful to use scientific notation for such large numbers.
