Answer аny three оf the fоllоwing four questions using course reаdings/videos аnd issues of your choice in short but well-planned essay responses. This exam is partially open book; you may access and use any course materials available on Canvas, as well as one double-sided page of class notes, which can be typed and/or handwritten. Please indicate at the top of each response which prompt you are replying to. Responses will be equally weighted, so I suggest spending about 25 minutes on each: at least 5 minutes planning and outlining, 10-15 minutes writing, and at least 5 minutes editing and proofreading. Before you begin writing, form an argument in response to the prompt you choose and determine how you will support your argument (thesis) using quotations, paraphrases, and references to arguments from the works we have read. Each response should quote, paraphrase, and/or refer to at least two (and preferably more) different readings, thinkers, or videos. Any single text, thinker, or video should be used no more than twice over all three responses.   What are some key philosophical principles that underpin democratic governance? Discuss the historical development of democracy, from its ancient origins to its modern forms. How do different political theories justify democracy as a legitimate and effective form of government? Why might democracy lead to different types of tyranny or despotism? Discuss the ways in which democracy can undermine its own principles through excessive equality, the choices of the people, and/or the concentration of power. What measures can be taken, including in constitutional design, to prevent these negative outcomes while preserving democratic values? How do different institutional designs (such as presidential vs. parliamentary systems and different electoral systems) affect the functioning of democratic governance? Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of these models, considering factors such as representation, stability, and accountability. What are some core similarities and differences between participatory and deliberative models of democracy? How does each approach envision citizen involvement in the democratic process? What are the strengths and weaknesses of each model in fostering genuine democratic engagement? Tips and Reminders: Make sure your answer to each prompt is clearly formulated and stated. Your argument will be stronger if it’s more specific. Avoid sweeping generalizations. In addition to quotations, you can use logical reasoning and current or historical examples as evidence to support your claims. Don’t forget to raise and respond to potential counterarguments. Think about how someone might take the opposite view and try to respond to that claim. Writing quality matters. Proofread; check spelling, grammar and syntax carefully. The most important thing is to make your writing as clear as possible. If quoting or paraphrasing one of the readings on Canvas, include a citation with the author, title of the work, and the page number.
