The fоllоwing infоrmаtion is included in the Bаckground Informаtion, Cognition, Communication and Social Emotional sections of Joseph Stein’s Developmental Evaluation:Joseph is an active and independent 25 month-old male who was referred for evaluation by his mother due to concerns regarding poor language skills. Joseph does not follow directions consistently, and has very few meaningful words in his vocabulary. Joseph calls all boys “Joely” and all girls “Gitty.” Pregnancy and birth history are unremarkable. Joseph is the eighth of ten siblings in this intact Yiddish speaking family. Mrs. Stein sees many similarities between Joseph and his fourteen year-old brother’s behavior when he was this age. Also, Joseph’s sister has been diagnosed with a language disability, and has a private therapist working with her. Joseph is an overall healthy child. Hearing has not been tested, but the newborn hearing screening did not indicate any concern. In the area of cognition, it was difficult to assess Joseph’s true abilities because he is very self-directed and only engages in activities that he chooses to engage in. Joseph was able to roll a wheeled toy, and demonstrate the use of a cup. He attempted to activate a giraffe that scoots across the floor, but did not accept any adult intervention to assist him in this task. Joseph was able to push pop beads together much to his mother’s surprise. Joseph made no attempt to place a small item into the neck of a bottle. Joseph did not particularly enjoy looking at picture books; he did display more interest when presented with a photo album of family members. Joseph could not identify any of the people in the photographs. Joseph does not yet engage in any type of pretend play. Joseph mostly empties cabinets, plays with water, and generally wrecks the house instead of playing with toys. The area of communication is one of great concern for Mrs. Stein. Joseph can follow simple directives, when he chooses to. Joseph says “Tati” and “Mommy” discriminately, but does not know his siblings names. Joseph makes a variety of sounds and babbles a lot while running around. He recently started saying “Darf” (Yiddish for “want”) to indicate that he wants something. Joseph mostly helps himself when he wants something, obliterating the need to ask for things. Joseph can point to familiar people or objects when asked. He does not respond to “where” questions or follow directions regarding placement of item in or on another. In the area of social emotional development, Joseph is described as independent. He does not maintain good eye contact, and does not like giving or receiving affection. Joseph ignores his mother when she tells him to stop whatever he is doing, but he giggles and shakes his head no, as he continues to run away or climb on the counter. Joseph did not attempt to share toys with his mother, nor was he visibly impressed with the compliments she gave him. When his siblings play together, Joseph likes to join them but he does not play in an interactive way. If someone takes away something that Joseph is playing with he usually just gets something else. His attention span is short and he does not play with any one item for any length of time. Joseph gets excited when his siblings come home from school. 1. Describe one way that you would facilitate more cooperative play among Joseph and his siblings: Include one intervention strategy and one interaction strategy. 2. If Joseph were a child in your toddler class, what techniques would you use to improve his ability to communicate? Include two strategies, one that will also improve Joseph’s ability to socialize with peers. 3. What strategies would you use to improve Joseph’s ability to follow directions? 4. Describe a simple pretend play activity that you would do with Joseph and another child in a classroom setting. 5. Joseph’s mom has stated that she doesn’t have the developmental toys that therapists bring for Joseph and cannot afford to buy him toys. As an early interventionist, you plan to come in to Joseph’s house the following time without any toys so you can demonstrate to mom how she can work on his goals using the materials and household items that she has available at home. Give an example of a goal or combination of goals you are working on and state the activities or routines you advised mom to use to work on these goals.

Explаin this stаtement “A Child’s Wоrk is Plаy.” Describe a child-directed activity, a rоutine activity and a planned activity that wоuld be effective strategies for intervention when included in an activity-based approach Why is working with the Family essential in order to reach your goals? Provide 2 reasons why trust building between the special educator and the family is important in Early Intervention? Name and define the 5 developmental domains: Sensory Integration is diagnosed when a child has difficulties with one or more of three systems. Please describe each system. Describe three ways that this might affect a child’s behavior. Describe the “fading of prompts” and using the “least active prompt” to facilitate task completion. In the exuberant period of brain development, the brain develops many more synapses, or neuronal connections, than it needs. Describe that process and how it can affect cognitive development. Give an example of a sensory activity you would use to embed language, cognitive, motor, and social emotional goals. Briefly describe the activity and state goals. Describe three intervention strategies that would be appropriate for a child who has been diagnosed as having low muscle tone. What is the zone of proximal development as described by Vygotsky? Name and Define the 4 stages of Piaget’s Cognitive Development List two reasons why the child that has difficulty attention would also have difficulty with academics and social interactions. Define the 3 basic cognitive processes: Choose 3 of the 5 developmental domains and explain how a child is able to develop and expand them during play scenarios.
